How to define a temperature load?

Before defining temperature loads, keep the following in mind:

  • Diamonds assumes that the default temperature of the structure is 20°C.
  • The temperature you define is an increasing or descreasing of this 20°C.
  • A gradient of for example +50°C, is translated to a load of +25°C at the top of the section and -25°C at the bottom. A gradient of -50°C, is translated as a load of -25°C at the top of the section and +25°C at the bottom.

 

Some examples:

  • Example 1: The desired temperature at the top of a cross-section is t_d_e_s_i_r_e_d_T_o_p=-15^{\circ}C and the desired temperature at the bottom is t_d_e_s_i_r_e_d_B_o_t_t_o_m=+3^{\circ}C.
    • Calculate the temperature difference between desired temperatures and default structure temperature (20°C)

          \[\Delta T_t_o_p = -15 ^{\circ} C - 20^{\circ}C=- 35^{\circ}C\]

          \[\Delta T_b_o_t_t_o_m = +3 ^{\circ} C - 20^{\circ}C=- 17^{\circ}C\]

    • Calculate value of the gradient/ global temperature load

          \[T_g_r_a_d_i_e_n_t = \Delta T_t_o_p - \Delta T_b_o_t_t_o_m= -35 ^{\circ} C - ( - 17^{\circ}C)=- 18^{\circ}C\]

          \[T_g_l_o_b_a_l = \Delta T_t_o_p - \frac{T_g_r_a_d_i_e_n_t}{2}= -35 ^{\circ} C - \frac{- 18^{\circ}C}{2}=- 26^{\circ}C\]

    • Insert values in Diamonds
  • Example 2: t_d_e_s_i_r_e_d_T_o_p=+20^{\circ}Ct_d_e_s_i_r_e_d_B_o_t_t_o_m=-2^{\circ}C
    • Calculate temperature difference

          \[\Delta T_t_o_p = +20 ^{\circ} C - 20^{\circ}C= 0^{\circ}C\]

          \[\Delta T_b_o_t_t_o_m = -2 ^{\circ} C - 20^{\circ}C= - 22^{\circ}C\]

    • Calculate value of the gradient/ global temperature load

          \[T_g_r_a_d_i_e_n_t = \Delta T_t_o_p - \Delta T_b_o_t_t_o_m= 0^{\circ} C - ( - 22^{\circ}C)= +22^{\circ}C\]

          \[T_g_l_o_b_a_l = \Delta T_t_o_p - \frac{T_g_r_a_d_i_e_n_t}{2}= 0 ^{\circ} C - \frac{+22^{\circ}C}{2}= -11^{\circ}C\]

    • Insert values in Diamonds
