What is the difference between a point and a node

A point A node
A point refers to the intersection of two or more (geometry) lines.. A mesh node (‘node‘ for short) refers to the intersection of two ore more mesh lines.
The frame below consists of 4 points.

A point, will always result in a node in the mesh.

The same frame contains 19 nodes.

The number of nodes depends on the chosen mesh size.
